The Pillars of MKD

MR. TATSUO UCHIDA

MRS. AYAKO UCHIDA

REV. MASATAKA AJIRO

Brief History

Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku is a tertiary educational institution of the Philippine Nikkei
Jin Kai in Davao City, Philippines. The College building was constructed in the year 2001
through the funding and generosity of the late Mr. Tatsuo Uchida (who died last May 2016), a
past President of the Japan-Philippine Volunteer Association (JPVA). The MKD edifice serves
as a legacy for his wife, the late Ayako Uchida who died in 1999.

MKD commenced its operation in the year 2002, with the strong support and assistance
coming from the JPVA headed by the President at the time, Mr. Masataka Ajiro, who helped
significantly in the establishment of the College and in the crafting of the school’s philosophy
and basic principles.

MKD is established primarily to address the needs of Japan and the Philippines, to help the
young Filipinos of the 21st century in their pursuit of academic excellence, to serve humanity,
and become a new bridge between the two nations. The establishment of MKD served as a
pinnacle of the JPVA activities and the growth of PNJK’s educational services.

Milestones

Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku continuously reaches remarkable achievements year after
year. One of the notable goals that MKD has achieved by far in terms of its Nihongo education is being the host institution for the whole Mindanao region for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), a worldwide examination in Nihongo since July 2015. As of December 2019, the College has already produced 422passers in N5 (Basic Level), 510 passers in N4 (Basic Level), 318 passers in N3 (Intermediate Level), 53passers in N2 (Pre-Advanced level), and 20 passers in N1 (Advanced Level).

Every year, MKD provides support through the Japan Study Tour Programs for our students, such as
the Annual World Youth Meeting in Japan, and the JENESYS Program. These programs provide an avenue and international edge for MKDians to experience being with other students from other Japanese schools. They get to showcase their Nihongo skills and learn the culture firsthand. MKD Nihongo teachers are also given opportunities for further studies in Japan.

From 2010 to present, there are already sixty-nine (69) MKD students who became grantees
of the Japan-Philippine Economic Partnership (JPEPA). The grantees are now gainfully employed
as careworkers in Japan. Eighteen (18) of them also already passed the Japanese National
Licensure Examination for Caregivers. Their license paved the way for their continued work
abroad.

MKD also encourages its students to experience studying in its partner universities and
colleges in Japan. Monbusho scholarships are also awarded by the Japanese government to the
MKD students.

For more than a decade, the students of the College has been consistent in bagging the top
awards during the National Nihongo Speech Contest in Manila, with twenty-one (21) First
Placers; eleven (11) Second Placers; and three (3) Third Place winners in the Student, Non-
Student and Open Divisions. One (1) Special Jury Award was likewise added to the long line of
recognitions given to the MKD students.
